INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME ENHANCES LOCAL SKILLS
March 2026
A renewable energy internship programme, launched fourteen years ago, continues to make a meaningful impact on community youth across the country. One of the current beneficiaries is 26-year-old Koketso Bob, who has joined De Aar Solar Power’s operations team and is steadily growing his skills and experience.
“I’ve always been passionate about electrical systems, and the idea that clean, sustainable technology can directly impact communities inspires me as well. Solar power combines both modern engineering and meaningful purpose, which made it the perfect field for me to grow into,” shared Bob, who has completed his N1–N6 Electrical Engineering certificates and is currently in his second year of a Diploma in Electrical Engineering through UNISA.
Working closely with Plant Manager William Saunders, who strongly values a collaborative team environment, Koketso is gaining first-hand experience of how teamwork supports the plant’s performance.
Sharing enthusiasm for his new role, Bob added, “Before starting my internship, I didn’t realise how much teamwork, coordination, and attention to detail a solar plant requires. I look forward to gaining more hands-on technical skills alongside my more experienced team leaders and building confidence with specialised equipment. Each day, I learn something new and that motivates me.”
Launched to develop a skilled workforce for the emerging renewable energy sector, this internship programme equips youth with the necessary skills to adapt to evolving industry needs and technologies. Its success is evident, with over 75% of previous beneficiaries securing full-time employment within the sector.
Notably, one of the many former interns at De Aar Solar Power has remained with the company and today fulfills the role of Asset Director, responsible for a portfolio of renewable energy projects.
