Globeleq Receives Industry Accolades for its Successful 2021 Performance

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM:  17 March, 2022 – Globeleq, the leading independent power company in Africa, has been awarded the prestigious “2021 Sponsor of the Year – Europe and Africa” and the “Power Deal of the Year – Africa” for closing the game-changing 450MW Central Tèrmica de Temane (CTT) in Mozambique.

Earlier in February, IJ Global announced the company had made the shortlist for 2021 Sponsor of the Year.  After having a hugely successful year through financing of three renewable assets in South Africa; reaching financial close on the acquisition of the 66 MW ARC solar PV plant in Egypt and two greenfield projects in Mozambique, the 450 MW Temane power plant and the 19MWp Cuamba project – one of the sub-Saharan Africa’s first grid-scale battery energy storage projects.

Mike Scholey, CEO, said: “In our 20th year of owning, operating and investing in power projects in Africa, this is such an honour to receive these awards by an esteemed group of judges.  Despite the pandemic restrictions, Globeleq committed over US$700 million in new investment in Africa during 2021.  I can’t thank everyone enough for all the sacrifices made to help fulfil our mission of powering Africa’s growth through the provision of quality energy projects.”

The IJ Global Awards recognise greenfield and refinancing deals closed in the previous calendar year.  This year, more than 1,300 submissions were received, but it is the company section that is peer review by infrastructure experts.

Jonathan Hoffman, Chief Development Officer for Globeleq added: “We couldn’t achieve this level of success without mentioning all the efforts of our stakeholders, financial institutions and advisors.  Thank you to everyone who played a part, and we look forward to fostering our relationships with all our partners to continue to grow our business and help alleviate Africa’s energy poverty.”
